Agent or no agent?

When writers strive for publication they usually start thinking about agents. My question is do you really need one? I’ve been e-published for over three years now. However, I’ve been looking at trying to write something geared for New York.

I have a finished novel that I believe is ready to go. It’s been sitting on my hard drive for over two years. I promised Kevin that I wouldn’t e-publish this book until I had exhausted all resources for getting it to a New York publisher. Deadlines and other complications kept me from editing and re editing this manuscript to get it ready to submit.

I’ve finally edited it to death and now it’s time to submit. The partial is currently at the Knight Agency by request and I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed that they’ll like it enough to take it on. I think I need an agent if I’m going to New York. I’d rather pay them the fifteen percent to explain and negotiate my contracts than try to do it myself and get myself into something that would be bad for me as an author.

I’m not saying that a New York publisher would do anything wrong. I just want to make sure that I do things right. An agent will help me, give me advice and negotiate a better contract. That’s something I have no idea how to do.

I’m interested to know what everyone else thinks. If you’re reading this, take the time to tell me. Would you rather have an agent or not?

I think it’s the next best step for me.
